The role of an Agile Coach, how it differs from a Scrum Master and a consultant, and the benefits of hiring one — a practical guide for leaders driving agile transformation.
Agile adoption stalls within a single team and never spreads across the organization — the key to breaking through this common wall is an Agile Coach. Here we explain the role and the benefits of bringing one in from outside.
An Agile Coach is a specialist who helps teams, Product Owners, management, and the whole organization work in an agile way. Whereas a Scrum Master supports a single team, an Agile Coach often works at a broader scope — multiple teams or the entire organization. Our agile coaching is built on this approach.
Whereas a consultant delivers answers or deliverables, an Agile Coach helps the organization find its own answers and grow autonomously. And whereas a Scrum Master mainly serves a single team, an Agile Coach takes a broader organizational view. Great coaches flexibly combine teaching, mentoring, facilitation, and coaching as the situation requires. However, to avoid any misunderstanding, I should point out that in many ways, a Scrum Master also serves as an “Agile Coach,” and the distinction between these two roles varies from organization to organization.
If you want an objective read on your organization's agile maturity, starting with our SM & AC Assessment Program is a good option. For specifics on how we help, see the agile coaching page or contact us.
